Obituary

The Rev. Ray E. He received a Masters of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His greatest passion was God’s calling to the ministry. He served the Lord as a Baptist Minister for 57 years, serving churches in rural Indiana; Appleton, Wisconsin; and numerous Kentucky churches including churches in Crittenden, Campton, Mt. Vernon, Corbin, Marion, Franklin, Utica, and several rural churches in Shelby County.  As a pastor he was always an active member of the community and recognized as a man who made a difference. He served as a City Mayor, hospital Board of Directors, College Board of Trustees, President of high school booster club and numerous other community services. He served the Kentucky Baptist Convention on multiple committees and as a Vice President. He was an active member of the Kentucky Baptist Ministers Association where he served numerous roles including president.

He was a gifted vocalist and a talented comedian. Additionally, he was a radio basketball commentator and was the play-by-play voice of several Kentucky high school basketball teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball and basketball.  He enjoyed serving as a KHSAA basketball referee.  He was a life-long loyal Kentucky Wildcats fan.  Go Big Blue!

He was preceded in death by his parents John William and Ida Mae Cummins and his sister Clara Sutherland.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Terry Joyce Cummins, and his two sons William Ray Cummins and wife Laurie;  Robert Marshall Cummins and wife Phyll Ann. He was blessed with 5 grandchildren (Kristin Williams and husband Ben, Katie Luna and husband Alex, Kelly Cummins, Karson Cummins, and Davis Cummins), and 2 great grandchildren (Billie Williams and Liam Luna).  He was also blessed with nephew Barry Sutherland and wife Mary Margaret, niece Lisa Sommer and husband Clay, and niece Dana Ashcraft and husband Harold.  He had great love for his entire family, but none greater than love for his two sons.

In lieu of a funeral service, a memorial will be held at a later date in Shelbyville, Kentucky.  The family requests that donations be made in his name to the First Baptist Church of Lewisville, Texas.

"I highly recommend this funeral home and crematorium; when I had to make and pay for my brother’s arrangements across state lines, Evelyn Montonya, in particular, demonstrated both compassion and professionalism and made a very sad and difficult situation much easier. Many thanks."

"The unexpected passing of my husband was a very difficult and trying time for my boys and I. I had the good fortune of having Abel walk us thru this process. Working with him was such a weight off my shoulders. He was professional, so polite and helpful. The service was beautiful – never did I feel rushed or like just another customer. They gave me the time I needed and I appreciate that so much! Also Mr. Brooks took special care of my husband as he is a fellow mason. I would highly recommend working with Abel and North Dallas Funeral Home."

"As soon as the call was made to Mr. Wayne Baxter all of my brothers final needs were taken care of. They walked me through what to expect the timeline and even dealt with the cemetery and the grave diggers. I was a hot mess due to my brothers sudden and unexpected passing. The experience was seamless and made it easy for my brother’s friends and family to say their last goodbyes. They even had the size to accommodate such a large group that showed up . The package deals that they offered were cost-effective and didn’t break my bank account. They included extras and accommodations that other funeral homes charged extra for. All the staff was amazing including Mr. Don Dodd . I can not thank them enough for all their help."

Dear John,

It was such a nice pleasure to meet you, and what you had planned for my father just took my breath away. It was so special to hear you tell us how he would just come over to talk with you. I think it brought him much comfort. Thank you for putting that Air Force article of him on your website. I am going to have a replica made of the painting of his plane to give you.

Thank you again for all you have done to honor our dad.

Love, The Gillilands
