Obituary
The Rev. Ray E. Cummins passed away peacefully at home in Lewisville, Texas on March 14, 2023. He was born January 5, 1935 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He attended college in Kentucky at Cumberland College and Georgetown College for his undergraduate degree. He received a Masters of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His greatest passion was God’s calling to the ministry. He served the Lord as a Baptist Minister for 57 years, serving churches in rural Indiana; Appleton, Wisconsin; and numerous Kentucky churches including churches in Crittenden, Campton, Mt. Vernon, Corbin, Marion, Franklin, Utica, and several rural churches in Shelby County. As a pastor he was always an active member of the community and recognized as a man who made a difference. He served as a City Mayor, hospital Board of Directors, College Board of Trustees, President of high school booster club and numerous other community services. He served the Kentucky Baptist Convention on multiple committees and as a Vice President. He was an active member of the Kentucky Baptist Ministers Association where he served numerous roles including president.
He was a gifted vocalist and a talented comedian. Additionally, he was a radio basketball commentator and was the play-by-play voice of several Kentucky high school basketball teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball and basketball. He enjoyed serving as a KHSAA basketball referee. He was a life-long loyal Kentucky Wildcats fan. Go Big Blue!
He was preceded in death by his parents John William and Ida Mae Cummins and his sister Clara Sutherland. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Terry Joyce Cummins, and his two sons William Ray Cummins and wife Laurie; Robert Marshall Cummins and wife Phyll Ann. He was blessed with 5 grandchildren (Kristin Williams and husband Ben, Katie Luna and husband Alex, Kelly Cummins, Karson Cummins, and Davis Cummins), and 2 great grandchildren (Billie Williams and Liam Luna). He was also blessed with nephew Barry Sutherland and wife Mary Margaret, niece Lisa Sommer and husband Clay, and niece Dana Ashcraft and husband Harold. He had great love for his entire family, but none greater than love for his two sons.
In lieu of a funeral service, a memorial will be held at a later date in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The family requests that donations be made in his name to the First Baptist Church of Lewisville, Texas.
