Obituary of Joyce Irene Budurin

Joyce Irene Newland Budurin was born in Caldwell, Idaho on April 2, 1946 to Paul and Audrey Newland. She was the youngest of three children and their only daughter. She attended church with her mom, Audrey, and two older brothers, Eugene and Raymond. She was active in Girl Scouts and various church activities.  When she was nine, Joyce, her mother, and two brothers were involved in a serious automobile accident which caused their mom to have amnesia which resulted in them moving to the Los Angeles area of California. There they were cared for by their maternal grandparents.  As an elementary student, Joyce learned how to twirl a baton by her life long friend, Marilyn Anderson. She even marched in the Monrovia Day Parade.  Joyce went to Monrovia High School and graduated in 1964. While in high school she was involved in the choir. Singing was a life long passion for Joyce.

After high school graduation, Joyce went to college, but decided it wasn’t for her. She entered the work force joining Handy and Harmon, then was a telephone operator, and finally worked at Bank of America. By 1970 Joyce was ready for college. She went to Citrus College in Arcadia, CA and graduated in 1971 with her Associates degree in Secretarial Science. A good friend of hers mentioned that he knew a guy who liked to sing and introduced her to George Budurin, her husband of 44 years.

Joyce and George married on April 22, 1972 in Monrovia. They then moved to San Diego where George had a job as a letter carrier for the postal service. Joyce was a domestic homemaker and enjoyed baking and making meals for her friends and family. In 1975, they welcomed their first child, Julie Anne followed three years later in 1978, by another daughter,  Sandra Lynn.

Joyce was an active member of her church, El Cajon Blvd. Church of Christ. She taught in the nursery class and helped her husband in preparing meals for the Senior Saints. She also opened her house to noisy teenagers to feed and play games on Sundays. Joyce was always the hostess and servant whether it be at home or at church.

Joyce drove a school bus for 11 years for Southwestern Christian School. She became the bus director and was a built in chaperone for her daughter’s field trips. In 1992, Joyce transitioned from driving a school bus to driving for a retirement community. She joined the staff at Canyon Villas Retirement Home driving the residents to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, the bay for seaside walks, or anywhere else they needed to go. She loved her job and the residents. After a few years she became the Activities Director. She planned everything to keep the residents active. She even put her singing talent to use by singing to them often either in informal settings or a concert in their dining room.

Upon retirement in December 2003, Joyce and George, moved to Lewisville, TX to be closer to their daughters and families. Joyce loved hosting her grandchildren at her home for sleepovers and baking.

Joyce and George became members of Webb Chapel Church of Christ. She became involved in the nursery program and eventually became the coordinator. She also worked with her husband to facilitate the youth auction and other fellowship events held at the church.

Her beloved husband of 44 years died suddenly in November 2016. She remained strong in her faith and love for the Lord. She was able to travel with her daughter Julie and family to the Bahamas for Thanksgiving 2018. She had a wonderful time taking naps poolside and enjoying gourmet food.

In April of this year Joyce was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. She was a trooper going through chemotherapy, occupational therapy, and everything in between. Her daughter Julie moved in with her to be her full time caregiver and her daughter Sandra, came down often to help. She was a fighter, but at the end was tired and ready to go home to Jesus. She passed peacefully at home surrounded by her two daughters and friends. We know the Pearly Gates were wide open for her to enter on Sunday, July 17th. It is comforting that her and George are reunited in heaven and singing to their hearts content.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Julie Bartley (husband Dennis) and daughter, Sandra Whaley (husband Michael), grandchildren William, Grant and Claire Bartley and Alex and Makayla Whaley, plus nieces and nephews and many friends.

George and Joyce were two of the kindest people in my life. They were up for anything including hosting teenagers at their house and taking the youth group on so many interesting activities. They were always smiling and ready to laugh at themselves or with others. They did not have a pretentious bone in their bodies. Heaven will no doubt welcome both of them and I for one intend to look them up if I make it to the pearly gates.

When George and Joyce came to Webb Chapel, it immediately became a more cheerful place. His presence in the foyer greeting everyone as they arrived for worship was something I looked forward to every Sunday. The birthday call every year with both of them singing was the highlight of the day. Joyce continued that tradition as long as she could. They loved the crock pot fudge and often bought one of the jars at the youth auction. George’s positive attitude and now conversations with Joyce are already being missed at Webb Chapel. They were a bright spot at church services and everywhere they went. I loved them both and I am sorry for your loss. Praying for peace and comfort for your family.

Julie and Sandra and family. Tommie and I weep with you in your loss as Joyce was not only a friend but our sister in the Lord. She truly will be missed as your father certainly is.
I would like to share this poem, whose authorship I am not aware.
God looked around His Garden and He found an
    empty place.
He then looked upon this earth and saw your tired
    face.
He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes
    the best.
He knew you were suffering He knew you were in
    pain.
He knew you would never get well on earth again.
So He closed your weary eyelids and whispered
    “Peace be thine”
He then took you up to Heaven with hands gentle
    and so kind.
It boke our hearts to lose you but you did not go
    alone.
For part of us went with you the day God called
    you home.
With all our Love, Herman and Tommie Cain

Joyce and George are my heroes. They are true friends who love and care about us. Joyce and George are wonderful parents of two of the nicest girls I have ever known in my life. They encouraged us with their efforts to work at church and for the school. I have wonderful memories of Joyce and George and Ron and I through almost 50 years. Ron and I were blessed by their lives and their friendship. We look forward to seeing them again in eternity. Friends forever.

  14. Joyce and George both held a very special place in my heart. They were always showing me true unconditional love and they will be greatly missed. Now they both get to go fishing with jesus!

  15. Such a sweet and kind soul who always had a smile on her face. Her beautiful voice is now among others in heaven singing praises to our Lord. May God bless your family with Peace and Comfort during this time of loss. She was so proud of her family.

We’re so sorry for your loss and so thankful that we got to know George & Joyce. They called us every year on our birthdays. As soon as we would answer, they would start singing Happy Birthday and Joyce continued the tradition after George’s passing. They truly were disciples of Christ and now we miss them both, but we’re so happy knowing Heaven is their new home!

  18. Joyce and George were a team. They were part of the foundation a Webb Chapel. Faithful, greeting, smiling, helping others. They were the first to greet me years ago when I first came to bat part of the cogeneration. Many fond memories. In Love, Ilene Ashworth
