Obituary

Jeffery Leray Stevens, of Plano, Texas passed away peacefully on November 22, 2022. He was 56 years old.

Jeff was kind, peaceful, gentle, generous, funny, loved to talk, enjoyed his work, loved being at home relaxing and watching movies, tv shows, or sports, and enjoyed taking walks.

We will all miss him and our lives will be less joyful because he isn’t here, but how fortunate we are to have known him and experienced either one year, 29 years, or a lifetime with him. We are all much better for having known and loved him.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 7, 2023 at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas, TX 75234.

Nearly 20 years ago Jeff and Mary moved into the house directly behind us and we hoped that we would get along well with our new neighbors. We had nothing to worry about, Jeff and Mary were the best blessing we could have received in the form of wonderful neighbors. Jeff became one of the bright lights in our day. Every time we saw him (and that was nearly every day) he had a huge smile on his face and an enthusiastic wave hello. Over the years we had many conversations about many subjects. Life took our moms and we talked often about how that left such a deep hole in our souls and how fragile life was. We talked about our projects, our spouses, our dreams, our wishes, our families and many other things. When our AC went out several times over those almost 20 years Jeff came to our rescue every time and with little kids and no AC (sometimes in the the summer) he was our savior. When Jeff and Mary attended our daughters wedding Jeff met my brother for the first time and by the end of the evening you would have thought they had been friends for years, that is who Jeff was, a friend to all. One of Jeffs last big projects was building his backyard shed which he was very proud of and had installed something like 1400 screws during its construction! Nice job Jeff, you never did anything 1/2 way. You always worked so hard and helped all of our neighbors when anyone needed help. I have tried to remember the last conversation that we had and have been unable to pin that down. Many times over the last weeks I thought I heard your truck in our driveway, and then I remember you have moved on. It is hard to reconcile that I will never see you again. I was in our attic the other day and I found a Nutrigrain Bar wrapper that you left when you were working up there last time, I cried and then I realized that you are still here, I just can’t see you, but I will see you again. Thank you for your wonderful friendship.

If you asked me to name the truly kind, compassionate, & genuine souls I have known in my life, Jeff would be right near the top of that list. We used to have conversations about family and the latest project he was working on, but inevitably the conversation would veer off into a discussion about our careers and being authentic in the workplace. As Jeff was describing how some in his business wanted to sell products and services that people did not need, he would push back and stand by his principles of right and wrong. I remember thinking, wow how fortunate any company would be to have Jeff Stevens working with them. There is something about truly genuine people that leave an unforgettable memory etched in our souls. It’s a gift from the best of their spirit to ignite the best in us.
Thank you, Jeff, for the gift of knowing you.

It was an honor having you as a neighbor for so many years! Thank you for always being so kind and helping my family out at a moments notice. We wouldn’t have made it through all those Texas summers without you! Rest easy Jeff. 💙

Jeff was my neighbor and watched my sisters and I grow up. Whether I was starting first grade or graduating from college, I could always count on seeing Jeff in the driveway greeting me with a wave and a smile. He was a wonderful neighbor. I will sincerely miss his greetings, but I’m so thankful I got to know him.

"I highly recommend this funeral home and crematorium; when I had to make and pay for my brother’s arrangements across state lines, Evelyn Montonya, in particular, demonstrated both compassion and professionalism and made a very sad and difficult situation much easier. Many thanks."

"The unexpected passing of my husband was a very difficult and trying time for my boys and I. I had the good fortune of having Abel walk us thru this process. Working with him was such a weight off my shoulders. He was professional, so polite and helpful. The service was beautiful – never did I feel rushed or like just another customer. They gave me the time I needed and I appreciate that so much! Also Mr. Brooks took special care of my husband as he is a fellow mason. I would highly recommend working with Abel and North Dallas Funeral Home."

"As soon as the call was made to Mr. Wayne Baxter all of my brothers final needs were taken care of. They walked me through what to expect the timeline and even dealt with the cemetery and the grave diggers. I was a hot mess due to my brothers sudden and unexpected passing. The experience was seamless and made it easy for my brother’s friends and family to say their last goodbyes. They even had the size to accommodate such a large group that showed up . The package deals that they offered were cost-effective and didn’t break my bank account. They included extras and accommodations that other funeral homes charged extra for. All the staff was amazing including Mr. Don Dodd . I can not thank them enough for all their help."

Dear John,

It was such a nice pleasure to meet you, and what you had planned for my father just took my breath away. It was so special to hear you tell us how he would just come over to talk with you. I think it brought him much comfort. Thank you for putting that Air Force article of him on your website. I am going to have a replica made of the painting of his plane to give you.

Thank you again for all you have done to honor our dad.

Love, The Gillilands
