Obituary of Dr. Frank Joseph Bradley, Jr

Dr. Frank Joseph Bradley, Jr.

October 29, 1928 – June 2, 2022

Beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, cousin, father-in-law, Naval officer, Osteopathic physician, missionary, neighbor, athlete, coach, fisherman, disciple and friend transitioned to the Church Triumphant following a life fully lived with an abundance of faith and gratitude.

Frank was born in Dallas, Texas, the son of Frank Joseph Bradley, Sr. and Helen White Bradley. His faith in God was nurtured through mentorship by Mr. H. Grady Spruce, Director at YMCA Camp Crockett, and active church memberships and service at Highland Park United Methodist Church, his first two decades, and Highland Park Presbyterian Church (HPPC), upon marriage.

Frank was social and athletic. When asked if he was a good athlete he said “ I was above average. I had speed.”  He was especially grateful to have played on the 1945 Highland Park State championship football team, been a top officer in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) and voted to serve as President of the Student Council at Highland Park, class of 1945. His college football career at Southern Methodist University was cut short by injury, but his love of the SMU Mustangs never wavered. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha (KA) fraternity and was a football and basketball season ticket holder for over 50 years. Go Ponies!

He met Joanne Peak, his wife of 64 years, on a blind date over the Christmas holidays set up by a KA brother. They went out every night for two weeks. At this point, he knew “she was a very nice and sweet and smart girl and would make a good wife and mother for my children.”  She was also an HP Scot and SMU Mustang. He proposed on Valentine’s Day and they were married the following December 29, 1953.  Joanne Peak Bradley preceded him in death on July 30, 2017.

Together Frank and Joanne had five children by 1967.  They blessed them with a home of generosity, grace and love. Trips to Colorado and South Padre Island were regular occurrences providing time to deepen relationships and be immersed in God’s beauty.  Frank and Joanne had numerous travel  adventures around the globe with life-long friends and family members.   Reminiscing about these relationships and trips via photos provided substantial enjoyment through the years.

Frank served his family, nation and community in many ways, including: US Naval Officer during the final stages of the Korean War, Texas Osteopathic Medical Association president, HPPC Jr High Sunday School Teacher, YMCA sports coach and Board Member, Physician on multiple Ethiopian mission trips to serve AIDS patients and their families through HPPC’s partnership with SIM USA in his 80s

He was predeceased by his Parents – Frank J. Bradley, Sr. and Helen White Bradley and his sister Elizabeth “Betty” Rose Bradley Bertrand.

Frank is survived by their children: Becky Paterik (son-in-law, Rich, and grandsons, Bradley and Brice), Brad Bradley (daughter-in-law, Jennifer, granddaughter Cassie, and great grandson, Mathias), David Bradley (granddaughters, Kristen and Brittney, and great grandchildren, Nikki and Brayden), Kathie Mateer (son-in-law, Dave, and granddaughter, Shelby) and Sharon Bradley (grandsons, Canyon and Devon (Rachel) and great grand daughter, Eva). He is also survived by niece Debbie Taubert, numerous additional family members and beloved friend, Nora Graner.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at Presbyterian Village North, who provided remarkable care and service for our parents.

A memorial service and reception for Frank will commence at 10 am Friday, July 22, 2022 in the sanctuary of Highland Park Presbyterian Church (3821 University Blvd., Dallas, TX 75205).The family requests that memorial gifts be made to Highland Park Presbyterian Church (https://www.hppres.org/special-giving  or 3821 University Blvd., Dallas, TX 75205) or YMCA Camp Grady Spruce (https://p2p.onecause.com/ymcadallas2022/donate or 1180 West Houston St., Anna, TX 75409).

I first met Frank as a roomate on a medical trip to Ethiopia (with Brad and Sharon). I’ll never forget his reading an X-ray using the sun as his lightbox. He and Joanne were two of the gentlest, kindest, family oriented people imaginable. Our lives are richer for having known the.

  4. Jan Stell says:

Dr Bradley had such a great sense of humor. After we sold their home in HP, which was down the street from the police dept, he told me they rarely locked their front door. I told him he would need a key, or Realtors would show his home and lock him out! He had a great laugh! I enjoyed visiting them at PVN too! Everyone was stopping by to chat with them. They were such a fun couple!
Heaven will have a great time !!
