Obituary of Moore, Jr., Eugene (Gene) Harrington

Eugene Harrington Moore, Jr—referred to at various times in his life as Junior, Gene, EU-gene, Counselor, Dad, and Opa—was born November 26, 1947 and left us April 11, 2014.

He was born and raised in Waco, TX, the son of the late Eugene Harrington and Charlotte Garrett Moore, themselves native Wacoans. The Brazos may run muddy, as Lyle Lovett wrote, but it runs strong in Gene’s family. After graduating from Richfield High School in 1965, he attended Baylor University, class of 1969, where he was a member of Circle K. Gene loved all things Baylor, particularly football, though to his final day he believed the only true BU football helmet was old gold with a single green stripe. In a freshman English class at Armstrong Browning Library, he met Sheila Duncan. They were married August 22, 1970, in her hometown of Longview, TX.

He joined the Waco City Attorney’s office after graduating from Baylor Law School in 1972 and then became an Assistant City Attorney in Irving, TX. Following that, he worked in the legal department of Lone Star Gas in Dallas before taking a position with Dresser Industries in Houston in 1976. In 1987, he became General Counsel of Dresser-Rand in Corning, NY, a city that forever held a fond spot in his heart.

Upon returning to Dallas in 2000, he maintained a private legal practice and was General Counsel of Ruhrpumpen—a job that often took him to Witten, Germany, whose residents treated him as if he were a native, even if he spoke German with a Texas accent.

Gene is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Sheila, his son and daughter-in-law Geoff and Nicki Moore of Los Angeles, CA, his daughter and son-in-law Emily and Seth Kenton of Silver Spring, MD, and three grandchildren—Brooks & Camille Kenton and Griffin Moore. He also treasured his sister and brother-in-law Carole Jean and Dr. E. Maxey Abernathy and their three children.

A memorial service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held Wednesday, April 16th, at 11:00 am at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Rd, Dallas, TX. Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to the Eugene H. and Charlotte G. Moore Law School Scholarship Fund at Baylor Law School.

Everyone Gene met became a friend, and anyone who heard his stories—from “too many clickety-clicks” to “Chronicle Bob” to “Agent Cupcake”—knew that he had the gift of gab as well as the gift of laughter. We will miss that, and we will miss him.

Please send the family condolences on this website.

Sheila, while trying to make contact with Gene today, I was shocked to learn of his passing.I look back with fond memories on the fun and challenging times that we worked together at Dresser in Houston. He was a wonderful colleague and bright spirit that would light up a room. The last time we were together was at least six years ago when we met for lunch while I was in Dallas for a meeting. His spirit and laughter had not changed over all the prior years. What a loss for all of us remaining but a bright addition for Heaven. Joanna and I want you to know that you, Gene and family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

  3. Ed Randolph says:

I wrote earlier, but was in a bit of shock at the time. All I said is true, but looking back at those words, it sounded more like I knew Gene long ago. In fact, I worked more with him in the last ten years, since we both left Dresser than ever before. And I saw Gene recover from that first stroke. And then another. But it was that first one. He worked so hard to rehabilitate himself and succeeded admirably. As always, he revealed his determination in the hardest times.

I first met Gene in 1981, in the days of Dresser Industries Power Systems Group, bumped into each other occasionally at Dresser-Rand, and conferred extensively in his most recent role as Corporate Counsel. He was long on ability and common sense, warm and outgoing–a real pleasure to work with.

Please allow Sarah and me to share in your loss, and know that Sheila and all will be in our prayers.

  7. Chuck Belveal says:

I worked with Gene over these last 14 years at Ruhrpumpen. He was a great friend to me. I will miss all his stories, as it seems every time I saw him or we talked he had a story that related to something we were doing. I know he was having fun with it all. The work, the family, everything. He was very proud of his family, and happy to update me about how you all were doing.

I am guessing Gene was chuckling to himself the time he gave me his tickets to a Baylor football away game at Oklahoma State. (I’m OSU orange) Anyway, maybe it was just those particular Baylor fans I was sitting around, as I was definitely surrounded, and they were giving it to me. I really think he set me up for that one!

  11. Randy Barnes says:

I will always remember my dear childhood friend. We met when I was new to the neighborhood in 1953, Gene, or Junior as I knew him, was 7 and I was 6. The Moore’s lived a house down on the next street and we spent many, many hours, playing “army” in backyards, skining knees crashing our bicycles, tussling in backyard football games, and I trying desparately trying to strike Junior out (usually unsuccessfully)when he came to bat. We spent many a night at each others house driving our mothers crazy by staying up late. We both saw snow for the first time when I was spending the night at his house (he was living on Grim of Gorman Ave. at the time). His mother woke us up at daylight and pointed out the window..wow, real snow! We couldn’t wait to get dressed and race outside. Dispite warnings, we took off outside, Junior slipped, conked his head on the sidewalk, and our dreams of a day of snow-filled fun were kaput! Ah, well. We were both devoted fishermen and enjoyed many trips courtesy of parents to Lakes Waco and Belton. Junior and I were really close until college stepped in and opened another chapter in our histories. I’ll always remember our childhood together. It was one I’ll aways treasure. Goodbye dear friend and may God bless you.

Sheila, I remember Gene’s first days at Dresser. He was such a newbie and I know “the girls” (I use the term loosely) made him miserable, until we eventually allowed him in. He turned out to be such a handsome man. I know you all will miss him.

  14. Frank Pittman says:

As noted in Gene’s obituary, Gene loved to tell stories. Many of his stories were a creation of his own humorous twist on people, places and events. Gene’s stories always ended with one of the most hearty and infectious laughs that I have ever heard. In fact, sometimes it was all Gene could do to get the story out due to his laughter. He was a kind person and the world will miss him. May God bless his family and may Gene be granted eternal peace.

The following is the message that I passed to the Ruhrpmpen’s employees:

Sadly I regret to inform you, that Gene Moore passed away last night in Dallas, Texas, he was accompanied by his family at the hospital. Gene did a lot for the company and was very important in the development of Corporacion EG and Ruhrpumpen, I had the privilege of meeting him back in 2000, we worked together many times, from the acquisition of the Tulsa plant, the battles with Flowserve, the formation of Ruhrpumpen Egypt, the negotiations with Northstar (Derlan) to buy back their shares in the company, among many other things he did.

Our thoughts and prayers continue with all of you. Ernie and Kate

  18. MY CONDOLENCES TO THE WHOLE FAMILY. VERY SAD NEWS, HE WAS SO YOUNG. I KNEW GENE DURING HIS TENURE AT D-R AND MAINLY IN CORNING WHILE I WORKED IN OLEAN. HE WAS SO MUCH FUN TO BE AROUND. HE HAD A LAUGH THAT FILLS A ROOM. WE TOOK A TRIP TOGETHER TO GERMANY, WE SPEND ONE DAY MEETING WITH A CLIENT AND BACK THE NEXT DAY. I GOT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT GENE THAN I EVER DID IN TWO YEARS OF WORKING TOGETHER. THAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE STUCK ON A PLANE FOR 20 HRS. HE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT A TRIP HE INTENDS TO TAKE WITH HIS SON TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOT STEPS OF HIS DAD DURING THE 2nd WORLD WAR. HE WAS SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS TRIP. I HOPE TO GOD THAT HE DID.

Aunt Charlotte, Junior, and Carol Jean are often mentioned when she reflects. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless, Debbi and Dutch

  44. My wife and I are friends of Gene’s sister, Carole Jean Abernathy.

We were so sorry to hear of Gene’s death. May the peace of Christ be with the family.
