Butler, Donald Lee

Donald Lee Butler, age 90, passed away at his home in Plano, Texas on June 29^th, 2021.

Don was born on September 7, 1930, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Ray and Iona Butler. In 1946, at the age of 16, he joined the Army Air Corps (now known as the Air Force), he stayed in until 1949 and then rejoined in 1953. He received an honorable discharge on April 30, 1954, at the rank of Sergeant.

Don met the love of his life Mary Ann King in Dallas, Texas and was married on December 14, 1963.

He along with a partner started a trade school on Jefferson Street in Oak Cliff. There they had classes to help people obtain secretarial jobs. After selling his portion of the trade school to his partner he went on to be an insurance agent for Banker’s Life & Casualty for many years. During this time, Don, took classes at Mountain View College to become an electronics technician. The remainder of his working career he worked as a Senior Electronics Technician for Rockwell Collins until his retirement.

After retirement, Don loved spending time with his wife, Mary Ann, traveling and working on family genealogy. They even moved and lived in Ajijic, Mexico for a short time.

In later years, Don selflessly devoted his life to taking care of Mary Ann until her passing in 2013.

Don had many interests. He was involved for many years in a fast-track investment group. He was a member of the Plano Amateur Radio Club. He recently took classes to brush up on his morse code sending and receiving. Another thing he loved was painting. He took art classes. He was always continuing his education and knowledge of anything that interested him.

Don never met a stranger, he had friends from all the groups where he was involved. He had friendships with so many people. He especially loved his Meals on Wheels delivery people. They did not just drop off his meal, they would come in and visit. They were his friends. Even people who were no longer on his route would make it a point to come visit him. Many of them would bring their grandkids. He would have the cartoons on and ready for them to come in and watch. Then when it was time to leave the kids knew that Mr. Butler always gave lollipops.

Don will be missed by so many. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ann Butler and brother Ray J. Butler.  He is survived by his son, David Butler, his daughter and her husband, Sam & Margaret Reta, grandchildren, Ashley Sopko and her husband Jared, Samuel Reta and his wife Amanda and Emily Reta. Great grandchildren Anthony Reta, Jaxie Sopko, Easton Reta (who has the same birthday as Don), Ally Reta and Jessa Sopko.

Services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021 in the Brooks Family Chapel at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234, beginning with visitation from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Celebration of Life service will begin at 12:00 pm, interment will be at 2:00 pm at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
