Obituary of O’Shea III, Daniel Patrick

Daniel Patrick O’Shea, III, ’57, and Jesuit’s Bishop Lynch Award recipient for that year as, in the Award’s own words, “the student of Jesuit High School who has most faithfully reflected the spirit of the school and has been most responsive to its influences,” died of kidney failure on June 21, 2021, in the Carrollton home of his youngest daughter with his family present. Born on December 14, 1938, he was 82.

After graduating from Jesuit, where he had also been a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, lead actor in the School’s Shakespeare play, and second team All-State right tackle on the Ranger football team, this first of seven brothers with no sisters entered the Society of Jesus and spent the next four years at the order’s Grand Coteau, Louisiana, seminary. He was then sent to St. Louis University where he earned his bachelor’s in economics together with master’s degrees in both economics and philosophy. For the next three years, he taught at Strake Jesuit in Houston where he also directed the theater program.

Theology in Toronto, Canada, followed with his gaining his third master’s and deciding, having declined ordination, that the priesthood was not his true calling. He then became an editor with McGraw Hill Ryerson publishers in Toronto. Four years after having left the Jesuits, he married Joan Marie Ferrigan who for seven years had been a nun in the Faithful Companions of Jesus, founded in France in 1820.

In 1980, he returned to Texas with Joan and the Canadian-born first four of their six children with two Texans to follow and joined with an area management consulting and training company before accepting an offer from Ursuline Academy in Dallas where he taught Latin for 23 years and, before retiring, portrayed the role of Tevye in an Ursuline production of “Fiddler on the Roof.”

In addition to their own children, he and Joan became and continued to be foster-parents to sisters Brandy and Tiffany Taylor and their brother Eugene who, as an adult and as a tribute to Dan and Joan, legally changed his name to Michael Patrick O’Shea.

Dan is survived by daughters Kathleen “Kate” O’Shea Carone and her husband Michael Carone, Meghan O’Shea, Siobhan O’Shea, Tara O’Shea and her partner Michael Johnson, Molly O’Shea Mulkey and her husband Garrett Mulkey, the three foster children as well as 10 grandchildren, and by brothers Michael J. O’Shea, ’60, Timothy T. O’Shea, M.D., ’62, and Kevin D. O’Shea, M.D., 67. He was preceded in death by his wife Joan who died in 2020 at the age of 74, son Daniel P. O’Shea, IV, brothers Joseph King O’Shea, ’59, Brian P. O’Shea, ’68, and Downs Syndrome Terrence J. O’Shea who had died in 1956 at the age of nine.

Memorial services will be held at Mary Immaculate Church, 2800 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Texas, Friday, July 9, at 10:00 AM.

Having entered the Jesuits at the same time Dan did and spending at least the next ten years in various phases of study with him made for many memorable experiences. Mostly that history left me indelibly marked by his friendship and daring spirit that accomplished more than I could have ever imagined possible had he not demonstrated its possibility.
Eminently kind, intelligent and dedicated, he is missed.

A MIGHTY OAK HAS FALLEN! Being with Dan was like hanging out with your favorite coach, smartest teacher, fiercest motivator, most endearing friend, staunchest ally and –of course — the eldest scion of the seven brothers O’Shea. May our Heavenly Father ease your grief and leave only the cherished memories of his loving ways. And may the Angels lead him into Paradise. Your friends, Larry & Mary Ackels and the Ackels Family.
