Garrett, Margaret Sue

Obituary

Margaret Sue Garrett, 92, of Lewisville, Texas, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2021. Born in Annona in Red River County, Texas, on May 31, 1928, to Hiram Chessier Simmons and Sudie Florence (Hunt) Simmons, she was the only daughter in a family of seven sons and spent her early years helping her mother with the household chores on the family farm. She graduated from Annona High School in 1945, where she was a pep squad leader for their six-man football team and played on the girls’ basketball team.

Upon graduation Margaret attended Draughon’s Business College in Dallas and soon after married her high school sweetheart, Benjamin Alexander Garrett, in October 1946. She was a loving wife and mother to their three children: Larry Neal, Jerry Don, and Sue Ann. Her first job outside the home was working for Business Men’s Assurance Company in Dallas, and later she enjoyed careers with John Deere and Braniff Airlines until her retirement in 1991.

After moving to numerous Texas towns for Ben’s work, the family settled in Farmers Branch in the 1950s. There Margaret joined Christ United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch as a charter member in January 1957 and remained a life member. She treasured her involvement with the Spirit ChristCare women’s group, who dedicated their lives in the service for God. She also served as the Publicity and Yearbook Chairperson for the United Methodist Women for many years. In addition to her church activities, she enjoyed a life filled with family fishing and hunting trips with Ben and her brothers.

Survivors include son Larry Garrett and wife Linda of Coppell; son Jerry Garrett and wife Debbie of Coppell; daughter Sue Ann Chaffin and husband Tim of Lewisville; brothers John Simmons and wife Veta of Dallas, Gene Simmons and wife Jenny of Texarkana, Tom Simmons and wife Betty of Richmond, Virginia, Marvin Simmons and wife Ann of Paris; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were husband Ben in 2009; her parents; and her brothers James Simmons, Robert Simmons, and David Simmons.

A funeral to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 2807 Valwood Parkway, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234. Visitation will be one hour before the service time at the church.

Burial will take place on Wednesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211. Those who wish to attend the interment may meet at the funeral home between 9:30-10:00 a.m. for a 10:00 departure.

"I highly recommend this funeral home and crematorium; when I had to make and pay for my brother’s arrangements across state lines, Evelyn Montonya, in particular, demonstrated both compassion and professionalism and made a very sad and difficult situation much easier. Many thanks."

"The unexpected passing of my husband was a very difficult and trying time for my boys and I. I had the good fortune of having Abel walk us thru this process. Working with him was such a weight off my shoulders. He was professional, so polite and helpful. The service was beautiful – never did I feel rushed or like just another customer. They gave me the time I needed and I appreciate that so much! Also Mr. Brooks took special care of my husband as he is a fellow mason. I would highly recommend working with Abel and North Dallas Funeral Home."

"As soon as the call was made to Mr. Wayne Baxter all of my brothers final needs were taken care of. They walked me through what to expect the timeline and even dealt with the cemetery and the grave diggers. I was a hot mess due to my brothers sudden and unexpected passing. The experience was seamless and made it easy for my brother’s friends and family to say their last goodbyes. They even had the size to accommodate such a large group that showed up . The package deals that they offered were cost-effective and didn’t break my bank account. They included extras and accommodations that other funeral homes charged extra for. All the staff was amazing including Mr. Don Dodd . I can not thank them enough for all their help."

Dear John,

It was such a nice pleasure to meet you, and what you had planned for my father just took my breath away. It was so special to hear you tell us how he would just come over to talk with you. I think it brought him much comfort. Tha you for putting that Air Force article of him on your website. I am going to have a replica made of the painting of his plane to give you.

Thank you again for all you have done to honor our dad.

Love, The Gillilands
