Obituary of Johnson Jr., Eugene

Mr. Eugene Johnson, Jr. was born to the parentage of the late Eugene Johnson, Sr. and Flower Bess (Garrett) Johnson in Dallas, Texas. He was a member of the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church.  Gene, as he was affectionately called by those who knew him well, was a very precocious child.  His curiosity was evident in his desire as an avid reader.  It proved to be a valued reality in his life as he loved education. All children have dreams and he was no different.  Although he played in the Booker T. Washington band, he dreamed of playing sports.  He tells the story of wanting to play football; he rails that he was an excellent receiver.  His own statement, “If you want to win throw the ball to Johnson!”  He also dreamed of attending college in California, but only made it as far as Prairie View A&M before enlisting in the U.S. Army Corps during World War II.  Thus, his life was like many young men of his generation, forever changed and dreams deferred. After his service during the war he immersed himself in the hotel and restaurant industries in Dallas and Los Angeles, California.  This seems to be a small consolation for his personal intentions.  Yet both industries provided him an education that would benefit him for life.  He never met a stranger.  That was evident in his ability to converse with anyone on any particular topic.  You couldn’t out talk Eugene Johnson, Jr.  His passion for reading and value of education enabled him to engage most people on any topic. Gene retired as a Psychiatric Technician from Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Greystone Park, New Jersey before relocating to Dallas and his final home.  He became a Crossing Guard for the Dallas County Schools.  He fulfilled his life-calling of service to all he came into contact with. Eugene Johnson, Jr. married Christine (Wadsworth) Johnson.  To this union Ms. Erika Jenae Johnson was born. They also had a daughter, Ms. Kimberly (Wadsworth) Hill.  He was preceded in death by his parents and former wife Christine. Preceding him also in death were aunts, Iva Joe Johnson, Macy Jewel Johnson and uncle, John Garrett.  He is survived by: sister, Macy Lodis (Raymond) Roberson; son, Eric Johnson of California; son, Dr. Kelvin J. (Kimberly) Kelley of Abilene, Texas; daughter, Erika (Johnson) Pringley of Marianna, Florida; daughter, Kimberly Wadsworth-Hill of Graceville, Florida; grandchildren Kiandre’ of Graceville, Florida, Karrie of Abilene, Texas, Cameron of Euless, Texas, Kelvin Lamar of Nashville, Tennessee, and Korey “KJ” of Abilene, Texas.  He is also survived by great-grandchildren: Anna, Alijah, Kaden, Alexander, Kingsley, Kimberly, Xion, Khristine, and Joy, along with nephew Cedric Mays (Fannysteen) of McKinney, Texas, and great-nephews Cedric II & Jayden.  The family would also like to acknowledge his special friend and caregiver Ms. Alma Marie Eddie, and Julius & Elnora Scott of Rockaway, New Jersey. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. in the Brooks Family Chapel at the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.  Visitation is on the same day from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  This is a closed casket service. Burial will follow at the DALLAS FORT WORTH NATIONAL CEMETARY with full military honors on Friday, June 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.
