Obituary of Welch, Joyce Johnson

Joyce Johnson Welch, beloved Wife and Mother, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on December 2, 2020 at the age of 84. She was born Joyce Anne Johnson on April 15, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois to Herbert and Mary Johnson. She was raised and attended school in Chicago, where she met Richard Arthur “Dick” Welch, whom she married on April 27, 1957. Their family grew with six children and moved to Dallas in 1969, where they spent the rest of their sixty years together. Joyce spent the early part of her adult life managing the extraordinary task of raising six kids, a never-ending cycle of cooking, cleaning, sewing, nursing, and counseling. Once the kids were old enough, she began to work outside the home, training to be a phlebotomist for Wadley Blood Bank and Carter Blood Care. She continued this good work for 20 years, and even continued to work on a volunteer basis after her retirement. She and Dick spent their golden years traveling all over the continent in their RV, seeing the sights and visiting family and friends. Joyce was a mother figure not only to her children, but to countless other friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. Her warm spirit, positive attitude, and loving disposition made everyone feel special, and she would always do whatever was needed to help someone out. Her selfless nature touched many lives, a true gift to all who knew her. Grandma Joyce loved to spoil her grandchildren; nothing made her happier than to be with them. Grandma visits were special times for the grandkids as well, making some of their favorite childhood memories. Joyce took great pride and joy watching them grow into the wonderful people they would become. Joyce was an accomplished seamstress; the sewing room was her refuge from the rest of the world, and usually a whirlwind of activity. She not only made and repaired clothes for the family, but also produced school uniforms for many neighborhood kids. She also found time to create some cherished stuffed animals, and to patch up a few that had been loved too much. Joyce was a devout Catholic, and continued to attend Mass regularly even when her health made it challenging. She was a founding member of All Saints Catholic Church, contributing to its growth throughout the years. Joyce is survived by her children Richard Welch, Kenneth Welch (Sheri Welch), Susan Luna (Joe Luna), Steven Welch, Joanne McNulty (Kelly Driscoll), and Daniel Welch (Sing Chao); her grandchildren Elizabeth Welch (Carrie Woodruff), Marissa Young, Stephanie Culver (Cameron Culver), Alexander Welch, Zoe Welch, Patrick McNulty, and Benjamin Ackerman; her great-grandchildren Carter Culver, Bennett Culver, and Hayes Culver; and her siblings Barbara Hoffman (Wesley Hoffman), Jeanne Elder, James Johnson (Cynthia Johnson), Lynn Andreini (Albano Andreini), and Margaret Fanning (John Fanning). Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Richard Welch; her siblings Richard “Dickie” Johnson, Gerald “Jerry” Johnson, Mary Ann Johnson, and Mary Jo Johnson; her parents Herbert and Mary Johnson; and her stepmother Hazel Johnson. Visitation will be held on December 12, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Brooks Family Chapel at the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234, with funeral mass at noon. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243. While floral tributes are appreciated, please consider as an alternative to donate in Joyce’s name to Carter Blood Care, or simply donate blood in this time of need. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

I am so sad for your family’s loss. Recently, I have had time to think about all the wonderful times I have spent with your family over the years. Your Mother was always welcoming and had room for “one more” at her table. I can still hear her sweet laugh. She will be missed. Love always, Judy
