Obituary of Koval M.D., Dr. Robert John

Robert John Koval, MD [“Dr. Bob”], 86, a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather, passed away peacefully June 30, 2020, at his home in Dallas, Texas, with his wife by his side until the end. He had been in hospice care for the last 3 years battling the last stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Koval was born in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Canada on June 5, 1934 to John and Julie Koval, immigrants from Russia finding freedom in Western Canada. He was raised as the son of a minister and the youngest child having 2 older sisters, Lillian, and Joyce. He never left his hometown until attending the University of Saskatchewan where he obtained a Degree in Pharmacy. As a Canadian Forces Reserve, he moved to Elliott Lake, Ontario where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Yvonne. They were married on June 25, 1960 and were inseparable. Bob later attended medical school at the University of Ottawa and moved to Minden, Ontario, to serve as the town’s only doctor for the next 20 years. He was known as the ‘Marcus Welby MD’ of his time, making house calls in the middle of the night and being constantly ‘on call’. It was his passion, along with golf. Many would be surprised to learn that his first love was illustration and drawing, and that he served as University cartoonist. He was also an avid reader and iconic movie watcher. On his days off, you would find him with a book. Bob and Yvonne had 1 daughter, Carolyne, and together, moved in 1981 to Dallas, Texas to advance his family practice.  He didn’t miss the cold winters, but he did miss hockey! Dr. Koval retired at the age of 80 with a life-long career dedicated to taking care of his cherished patients. He was a consummate professional that treated everyone with dignity and respect. He was kind, gentle, and wonderful listener. It was not rare for patients to sometimes just stop in to ‘talk’, being known for his dry humor and always leaving you with a smile. He was also open to all avenues of healing including a yearlong trip to China with his family to learn the ancient art of Acupuncture. Dr. Koval was not loud about his faith but he lived it in service to others, every day of his life. He was loved and respected by an immeasurable number of patients, friends, and family in both Canada and Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, and is survived by his devoted wife Yvonne Koval, his loving daughter Carolyne Koval Davis, his son in law Matthew O. Davis, and their 4 children [his grandchildren], Mattey, Max, Molly and Madelyne. All services will be held privately and with immediate family only, due to the Covid epidemic and the fragile health of his wife. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

Sorry to hear of his passing. He was the best MD I had ever experienced. He diagnosed my torn rotator cuff and sent me for an MRI when another Dr. said it was Fibromyalgia. We used to have the best conversations.

Sad to learn of Doctor Koval’s passing. He was my primary care doc in the ’80s and ’90s when I still lived in Dallas. Best doc I ever had. Always attentive, always a good listener, and unlike so many other docs, not too quick to prescribe chemicals when a home remedy would do just fine. Like when he told me to clear my chest congestion by boiling some brandy in a pot of water on the stove and put a towel over my head to create a tent and inhale the alcohol-infused steam. (Brandy was never my choice, but I got the gist of the advice, and have done it for years whenever I get that pesky chest congestion. Works like a charm.) I didn’t know him well, but I always knew I was in good care as long as he was my doctor. RIP.

It is with tremendous sorrow that I learned today of Dr. Koval’s passing. He was the best diagnostician I have ever met and the standard to which all other doctors continue to be compared. He was a gifted physician and his in-depth knowledge of medications was without compare.
Dr. Koval treated everyone with kindness, compassion and dignity. I will always remember Dr. Koval and he will live on in my heart.

  7. Karen & Betsy Kuebler says:

Dr. Koval was our “family doctor” for decades. He became a friend, as well, always delighting us with his dry humor and undeniable kindness. He saw us through many illnesses and difficulties, and we were at an utter loss when he retired. I (Karen) was about to attend my first year at SMU when we first visited Dr, Koval in his Preston Center office. Dr. Koval at that time was frantic with worry about his own daughter who wanted so desperately to spread her wings a little and live on the SMU campus away from home. He gravely asked our opinion, and we could only agree with him, for he had long since made up his own mind to rent a dorm room on campus for his beloved “little girl” on the strict condition that she occupy it only during the day and return home to her own bed each night. He was as splendid a doctor as he was a father and family man, and your loss must be unbearable.

Bob, may you rest in peace.Thank you for your great generosity towards our family and especially towards our parents. As a Christian, you believed that death is simply the beginning of a new life and the end of human sufferings. May you now enjoy peace, love and all those same qualities and beliefs you so fervently practiced. You will be greatly missed but we will be comforted by the thought that you have left for a better life.
